The year 2020 is shaping up to be a year worth remembering as the start of a new decade begins, and the past decade behind us. Perhaps the most memorable moment in the history of the information technology industry is the end of an era – specifically that of Windows 7 and Server 2008.

As of January 14th, 2020, Microsoft’s Windows 7 and Server 2008 operating systems are officially “End-of-Life”.

What this means for most users is that like Windows XP, which has been retired for over a decade now, further updates and enhancements will not be available for those without Extended Update Support licenses through any of Microsoft’s Software Assurance programs. The ESU program provides updates for a further three years but incurs a significant cost to maintain.

It is important for companies to begin migrating away from Windows 7/Server 2008 as soon as possible if they haven’t already started. Security threats may present themselves in the future, much like we have seen with the havoc WannaCry caused for systems that were still running Windows XP well past it’s EOL date.

As a service provider it is important that we work with our customers to help them navigate the ever-changing world of IT, and we are ready to assist in this transition for our valued customers. If you need assistance, please contact our support or sales teams and we’ll be glad to help.
